Why you are what you READ

The food you ate, the music you listened, the movie you watched, all combines together to the result of a unique mix of your character.

You sure have heard the phrase or other similar phrases such as "You are what you eat" or "You are what you listen". These phrases convey the meaning that you are what you consume, from your Spotify playlist, Netflix watchlist or even books that you read. Basically anything you consume leads to the change in your body both physically and mentally.

Not all people love reading

Not all people love reading and I have my friends who came and tell me that books aren't worth reading since they cannot depict well enough images in their heads like movies or comics could. I understand, I really do. Reading to me requires concentration. When you read, you are constructing an image of what you read and oftentimes, you start shifting to other thoughts in your head after 30 minutes of reading. Although your eyes are still reading the words, you do not actually understand or catch any clue what the paragraph is about. But that doesn't mean I don't enjoy reading.

Those who love and enjoy reading will have a vivid image and have the ability to picture as they read. We call those people bibliophiles. It basically is the love of books whether collecting or reading. The fun fact about books is that you are able to picture anything to the way you want while films cannot. We all have different preferable tastes of what we read whether its fantasy, sci-fi, or literature. Books give knowledge to readers more or less, therefore you often hear many successful individuals say that reading books is the best thing to practice your mind.

You are what you consume

What you consume into your mind and body results in the work you produce, the decisions you make, and also the ability to think to a certain extent. The food you ate, the music that you listened to, the movie that you watched, all combine to the result of the mix of your character.

I consider myself as a person who is more capable in creative fields rather than mathematics or numbers although I'm not that much of a creative person, so novels are the kind of books that I read with great relish. To me, reading novels is like entering into alternative realities that writers meticulously build, a world full of imagination. In there, you sometimes find yourself as a character or a being that knows all (Narrator). Whether the character the writer ought you to be, you will find yourself in this fascinating world that everything just looks so surreal and interesting where you can picture it how you want.

No matter what you read, choose to read the book that you enjoy reading. You have no need to read only the bestsellers or award-winning books because there are books that don't require awards to be worth reading. Everyone has different tastes and I want you to know yourself through books that you appreciate. I want to end with a quote from Warren Buffet,

"The greatest investment a young person can make is in their own education, in their own mind. Because money comes and goes, relationships come and go. But what you learn once stays with you forever."
